Messy in the Middle- Episode 9: Growing and Managing Your Team with HR Expert Kira La Forgia
One of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship is the human side, growing and managing your team. How do you bridge the gap between corporate HR policies and the modern needs of online entrepreneurs? Kira La Forgia is back in episode 9 of the podcast to answer this question for you.
Kira is a Director of Operations/HR turned small business consultant for millennial entrepreneurs. With a decade of experience in People Operations in the corporate world, Kira is no stranger to the sensitive issues involved in the human side of running a business. There’s a lot to learn from hiring, onboarding, training, and managing the performance of over 500 employees for a multimillion dollar business. The good news is, she learned it all so you don’t have to. In this episode, we are talking all about how to grow and manage your team!
In this episode, we talked all about Kira’s Set to Scale membership!
The Breakdown
Kira thought about starting the membership to help online business owners. For a long time in the world of HR, there were a ton of different resources for businesses, but very few providing resources for online and virtual teams. Instead of having these people/businesses spend time constantly Googling what to do, she wanted to create a place where they could act quickly. They need a place to get info quickly and easily, and allow them to ultimately have a greater impact with their team. You can get the right answer with just one Slack message!
The membership quickly grew to be a community where people could talk about their team needs, ask for help, and have people on their side in an accessible and relatable way. As part of the membership myself, I personally like it for the day-to-day management issues if you’re a business owner without a boss or someone in your personal life who understands what you’re doing. There’s a wide variety of people enrolled and it’s nice to be able to hear about different issues from different perspectives- because HR isn’t one size fits all.
If you’re feeling like your business is too small, Kira will be the first to tell you it isn’t. You’re still going to be held to the same standards and laws as any big business. You have to protect yourself, your business, and your employees and make sure your expectations are clear! If you have even one employee, you’re not too small for HR services.
Kira also has a management training course that helps people understand how HR can give you a leg to stand on and allow them to deliver it in a way that makes people want to understand and learn from them.
